Unexpected Sketching

A few days ago, this nice woman was grooming her dogs right outside my office. Her dogs were beautiful. I asked if I could sketch them and she said yes! I made a friend, and she got some sketches of her dogs. Happy day. :)

Generica in Panther Gear

Very soon the game I'm workin' on Trivia Adventure is going to get an influx of TONS of new armor and weapons. This is one of the armor I'm workin' on. I think Generica rocks her new gear, don't you? :)

Figure Drawing

OMG readers, what a long day. Woke up at 7, read a few chapters of Imagine, by John Lehrer, ran to the zoo, drew, hauled my butt to work, worked, ran to figure drawing, drew, crawled home, worked out (My biceps are so tired I could hardly shampoo my hair), and now i'm updating my blog. What a long day. Feels awesome to get a lot accomplished. :)

Until next time!

Pit Stop at the Zoo!!

Just making a quick stop at the zoo before heading to work. I picked up a new sketchbook from half price books and wanted to break it in!
Here's me shortly after drawing the tiger. Look how happy I am!
Drawing with a pen is hard. I need to do it more often. I use a pencil at work all the time, and erasing is a great luxury, but the pen makes me more deliberate and thoughtful. I should do pen drawings more often...

That's all folks! Off to my job now :)

The Bryants - Missing You

I love the Bryants. Adam made it easy for me to go to work, because I knew that when I got bored or tired I can come to him for inspiration. He was always cheerful, despite being in pain with cancer every day. He was very motivational. He got me excited about work. He has a marvelous sense of humor, he can always make me laugh and smile. He was awesome to work out with. It must be hilarious seeing this tall 6-foot-something muscly guy next to tiny little 98-pound me, spotting me on the bench press. And we made a cool garage game together! (PC Gamer, Top 100 game!) Since we separated ways, I miss him so. How are you, Adam? Please call.

His wife, Deidre is pretty well known. She is an amazing fitness model, but even more amazing are her mothering skills. I have never seen such well-rounded, HAPPY, and delightful children. Keyword HAPPY. If only I was raised by Deeds, I wouldn't be as jaded, cynical, and cranky as I am now. At my wedding reception she was doing plie squats while carrying her Shiloh, and always finding ways to be active with her kids. I remember her biceps bulging through her sweater while she was cradling her baby. She's pretty inspiring. Anyway, in honor of Deeds and her mother skills, I drew this picture of her:

I miss you guys!

What is Art?

The way I see it, if you intend for the work to be art, it's art.
That's why Marcel Duchamp's toilet signed R. Mutt is art. Never mind that it was ready-made.

So then, everything is art, right? No. It needs a sentient mind declaring it to be so.
Whether it is good or bad is up to the viewer.

See, there are two sides to the equation. The maker, and the viewer.

one makes, and the other is either moved, detests, applauds, or whatever by the work. It is the viewer that determines the quality of the art to them. So yes, the urinal signed by Marcel Duchamp IS art, but is it any good? That is the real question, not whether or not it IS art.

A final note. You know art can take on so many forms, but there's always an uproar when someone says digital art isn't fine art. I think people need to realize that fine art isn't a QUALITy that is placed upon art, but a FORM of art. Photographic art is protographic art, digital art is digital art, performance art is performance art. Fine art merely means that the materials used is paint, pencils, paper or canvas. It has nothing to do with the quality of the piece. Fine art can be bad too, even though it is "fine"

So that, in a nutshell is my definition of art. So when someone says to you, that's not art, tell them, yes it is, it's BAD, but it still is art. It's bad art. Or yes, it is, it's digital art. Or, yes, it's programmer art. it's BAD, but it's art.

That's my two cents.

Pit Stop at the Zoo before heading to work

Woke up early thanks to the neighbor's donkey braying his head off. Drove to zoo, now I'm off to my job.

Some ask me why am I so ceaseless. Why can't I find time for other aspects of life? Why does the art come before everything? I'm so afraid. "The fear that your fate is in your own hands, but that your hands are weak."* To me, all the obsessive practice is to control my future. How solid I am as an artist directly affects my life, financially, emotionally and otherwise. There is nothing else I know how to be. I can't program, I can't write, I can't be anything else.
