Watercolor - Bruiser and Scratch

Hello people who actually read my blog! (That's you Jason)

You might recall a time where I posted no art at all. Actually, I was doing all kinds of drawing. Just couldn't post it here because I was under a non-disclosure agreement. Anyway, I did a freelance gig with the really awesome guys at Steel Penny Games. Anyway, my job was to redesign the main characters from their first Wii title Bruiser and Scratch, so they could re-release it for the Intel App Store. I did so much work in such a short period of time, which was designing, modeling, and animating the 2 main characters all in one month. I pumped out around 40 animations, which I will someday show a few on my video game portfolio. I had no idea I could be so efficient, because after working a 16 hour day, I would still get on my exercise bike to keep my pounds in check every day. Anyway, I was incredibly busy, but I was incredibly happy, especially when my last job was to paint a family portrait of the characters in watercolor, which you see above.

Anyway, I did a lot of drawing but here are my favorites from that adventure:

Gesture Drawings of Gracie and Honker

Well, the figure drawing session was canceled yesterday for some reason, so I decided to draw my dogs.
This is my dog Honker sleeping. She's compact and muscular which makes her great for anatomy studies. About Honker; Honker doesn't understand ownership and playing with toys. She much prefers fishing and hunting outside. She has caught squirrels, rabbits, and fish. We didn't teach her that, but I think since her previous owners neglected her she just learned to hunt to stay alive. She is an expert at catching grasshoppers out of the air. As a result, when we toss popcorn in the air for her she catches them with ease. Anyway, the problem with dogs is that they get uneasy being stared at, so she crawled into her crate after these few drawings...

These next ones are of Gracie. She doesn't like being stared at either, so she's always rotating, always facing away from me. Luckily I got a few good ones. While Honker is squat and muscular, Gracie is built more like a ballet dancer. She's long and lean but also strong. She's undefeated at Tug-of-war vs other dogs despite her tiny frame. She isn't a hunter like Honker but plays non-stop. The only thing she has "hunted" was a turtle, whom she brought back to us alive and well. We put him back in the lake. Unlike Honker, Gracie can't catch for shit. We throw popcorn at her and she kind of braces herself for impact, then eats it off the floor.

Sketchbook - Trucks, Cars, People, Goats

 Went to the zoo today, drew these...

 I only had an hour to draw the goats before it started pouring!! Bummer. The zoo trip ended quickly.

Watercolor Sketchbook - One is the loneliest number...

So I painted two of every animal. These are from the Capital of Texas zoo. I did all the paintings on location. Did pencil studies first, then posed them according to my imagination with the animal there as reference, then did the painting. Hope you like them :) They're 6" x 9" in size

The goat is my nemesis. I have a hard time drawing them. I struggled with this pose.

15 Minute Drawings at the USAA - The Girl with the Elephant Tattoo

More life drawings from what felt like 100 feet away from the model (it was more like 15-20). Plus the light was on the other side of the room so all I got was 100% shadow. Overall a crappy experience. *sigh* Good thing the people there are nice. :)

Watercolor - Walnut Creek, En Plein Air

I love this park. It's a leash-free dog park. People that go here are people who love dogs, so they're perfectly understanding when your dogs run up to say hello. In fact they love it. They don't freak out. I had so much fun bringing my two dogs Gracie (next to the man in red, my husband), Honker, the one in the foreground. And Frannie (middleground dog) came with her owner too!
Plein air painting is fun, but even more so when you can bring your dog :)

Goats and a Deer from the Capital of Texas Zoo

Hooved animals baffle the heck out of me. Especially goats!! They're knobby and have weird proportions. From the side they look like any normal hooved animal, but from the front you notice how freakin wide they are. Go try drawing a goat and you'll see what I mean!

I have a collection of plastic animals from Schleich that I use as study aids for animal drawing, but I haven't been able to find a goat for purchase yet. I usually find them at Target or Tractor Supply, but I haven't ran into a goat for sale yet. Bummer! I really want a goat toy!!
