So I painted two of every animal. These are from the Capital of Texas zoo. I did all the paintings on location. Did pencil studies first, then posed them according to my imagination with the animal there as reference, then did the painting. Hope you like them :) They're 6" x 9" in size
The goat is my nemesis. I have a hard time drawing them. I struggled with this pose.

GeneriCorp Employees Part II
More employees of GeneriCorp. Still having fun with gouache, although having difficulties keeping my brushes from fraying when I apply paint thickly. Not really sure what sort of brush to use... Anyway, these are fun and I hope you like them.

Studies from The Body Exhibit
The ick factor was high, but I had to snatch a chance to draw from corpses. I did a lot of observation, and I believe I did gain a better understanding of how muscles connect and lock. Some of the exhibits were really eye opening. There was an exhibit with an arm just laying there with the skin peeled off. If you looked at it without the hand there, it seriously looked like a pile of chicken meat, down to the texture of it. It will make me think twice about biting into a chicken drumstick again. (That is, if I wasn't already vegetarian.)
I was worried that the exhibit would be too much for me, but it really wasn't that bad except for a few. The exhibits I had to skip outright was the cross-section of a man from head to toe and the one from front to back was too much for me. Overall it was very educational and I think I'm a tiny bit better artist for it.

GeneriCorp Employees Part I
My husband is also an animator. That rocks! He understands my obsession with drawing, we talk shop all the time, in fact we've been talking shop for nearly a decade and still haven't run out of art-related topics. Anyway, he asked for my help with his latest animation. While he's storyboarding, he wants me to help do some character designs. These may not be the final characters, but they are jumping points to whatever will be eventually... These were done in gouache. Really new to the medium, but I do like it already. I still have 6 characters to paint up so watch for them here :)

15 Minute Drawings at the USAA - The Girl with the Elephant Tattoo
More life drawings from what felt like 100 feet away from the model (it was more like 15-20). Plus the light was on the other side of the room so all I got was 100% shadow. Overall a crappy experience. *sigh* Good thing the people there are nice. :)

Watercolor - Walnut Creek, En Plein Air
I love this park. It's a leash-free dog park. People that go here are people who love dogs, so they're perfectly understanding when your dogs run up to say hello. In fact they love it. They don't freak out. I had so much fun bringing my two dogs Gracie (next to the man in red, my husband), Honker, the one in the foreground. And Frannie (middleground dog) came with her owner too!
Plein air painting is fun, but even more so when you can bring your dog :)

watercolor - Aesop's Fables, The Mice in Council, "Who is going to bell the cat?"
The cat illustrated is based on my cat named "Friendly". He was named as such because he is friendly to people. But when it comes to mice, it is a different story. A few weeks ago he caught a mouse that was at least half his weight. It was so big, we thought it was a hare.
The painting is 15"x22.25"

ps. Those mice are as good as dead

Watercolor - Aesop's Fables, the Fox and the Grapes
Last Sunday picked up a copy of Aesop's Fables. I used to read like a SOB until it started costing too much money. Yes, I know, go to the library... It just so happens I live in the boonies and going to the library is quite a special out-of-the-way trip. Anyway, sorry for the tangent. I bought this book because I never have any great ideas of what to paint. I opened the book and there was a painting idea right there on the first page. Wow it seems like I wont be out of painting ideas for a very long time.

AVAA Short poses - Barbara
<30 minutes
15 minutes
10 minutes
5 minutes
1 minutes...
As much as I like the people at the USAA, the AVAA I feel offers a better drawing experience for me. I'm always closer to the model, so I see forms better. The lighting is less general and focused. The breaks are shorter, which I like. Not a big socializer. So I like to get away from breaks and get down to the drawing business as fast as possible. I like the variety in pose lengths. I like warming up with gestures first. I like that it's three hours, not just two.Too bad it's super dirty and the music never changes. Nontheless, I'm there to learn, so I can get past the downsides.
anyway, my part time job is now over. so I have to get back into the drawing groove. I've been feeling super rusty lately.
Have a good night!

Goats and a Deer from the Capital of Texas Zoo
Hooved animals baffle the heck out of me. Especially goats!! They're knobby and have weird proportions. From the side they look like any normal hooved animal, but from the front you notice how freakin wide they are. Go try drawing a goat and you'll see what I mean!
I have a collection of plastic animals from Schleich that I use as study aids for animal drawing, but I haven't been able to find a goat for purchase yet. I usually find them at Target or Tractor Supply, but I haven't ran into a goat for sale yet. Bummer! I really want a goat toy!!
Have a nice day!
